The National Gallery
Transforming a historic lecture theatre into a flexible, accessible space for modern performances and larger productions
Client challenges
Outdated infrastructure and limited accessibility.
Fixed seating was unsuitable for modern performance and film needs.
Need for acoustic and lighting improvements.
Visual integration with wider gallery theatre spaces.
Transformational impact
Fully accessible stage via flat ramp.
Removable seating accommodates film crews and flexible layouts for accessibility.
Enhanced acoustics and lighting elevate user experience.
Theatre now aligned with wider NG200 design and finish standards.
As part of the wider NG200 initiative at The National Gallery, AIS were appointed to refurbish the 300-seater Pigott Theatre. Over six months, the space was carefully stripped back and upgraded to offer enhanced flexibility, comfort, and accessibility. Existing chairs were removed and reupholstered by specialists, while new wiring, audio and visual equipment, lighting, and acoustic panelling were installed. The new floor finishes, timber finishes matched the gallery’s aesthetic, and stage access was improved with a flat ramp and new curtains. This renovation prepares the space for increased usage and diverse formats.
